National League preview and tips: Goals expected at Altrincham as Notts County continue to battle for title

With Wrexham enjoying a night off, County cannot afford to lose points and leave the league leaders with two games in hand. As they beat Scunthorpe 4-0 at the weekend, Wrexham were putting York to the sword at the Racecourse Ground, 3-0.

The teams have matched each other step by step over the course of this season, but the county has been wrong twice on their travels this month. A pair of 1-1 draws at Bromley and Barnet aren’t bad results on their own, but they did leave the door open for Wrexham.

Given the outlook for the remaining matches, defeat here could leave them three points adrift and offer Wrexham the chance to open a nine-point gap at the top.

A win, on the other hand, would put the county top with five games to go. Wrexham will play the first of their games on Saturday, and then the teams meet in the second game of Easter weekend, after which the county will have three games left.

Recommended bet: Notts County win and over 2.5 goals

Altrincham are currently 15th in the National League table with little to no chance of making the play-offs. Despite winning 10 of their last 15 at home, a spotty record coupled with the Robins’ early-season form seems to have cost them dearly.

An 85th-minute Eoghan O’Connell goal handed Wrexham a 2-1 win at the J Davidson Stadium in February, and that may serve as a warning to county that Altrincham is not a pushover.

They’ve found the net 32 times in 19 home games this season and that’s a record that compares with most teams in the National League.

While Notts County have picked up an impressive 45 points on their travels, if anything is going to be their undoing, it may be the number of goals they concede.

They have only kept three clean sheets on their travels in the 2022/23 season, meaning 17 of their opponents have found the net at least once. Six of them have found the net twice, but Dorking, in 19th place, remains the only team to have beaten them.

Many of County’s problems at the back have little to do with their quality in those areas, and more to do with their non-negotiable style of play. Nobody averages more shots per 90 minutes than the Magpies.

It’s a little misleading to see County also allowing fewer scoring chances than anyone else in the league, but several of those have been set-piece goals and transition goals as they go.

Tonight is a must-win game for the visitors against a home team that has nothing to lose, and it would not be a surprise to see an open, competitive, high-scoring game.
