The sporting director who once signed Sadio Mane is in talks with Liverpool on a possible U-turn

Liverpool have been in talks with Paul Mitchell about a summer move to become Anfield’s new sporting director.

That’s according to Get French Football News, which claims Mitchell has spoken with Liverpool.

Mitchell is set to leave Monaco at the end of the summer transfer window, even with the Ligue 1 club trying to keep him.

A return to England could be on the cards for Mitchell as Liverpool need to find a sporting director.

Michael Edwards left the club last summer and was replaced by his replacement Julian Ward.

However, with Ward also leaving Liverpool this summer, possibly heading to Ajax, the Reds must find a replacement.

German directors such as Markus Krosche and Sven Mislintat have been linked, but Liverpool could opt for Mitchell.

Mitchell hails from Stalybridge in Greater Manchester, so a return to the North West could be attractive.

A utility man in his playing days, Mitchell played for Wigan Athletic, Halifax Town, Swindon Town, Milton Keynes Dons, Wrexham and Barnet before resigning in 2009.

Injury forced Mitchell to retire at just 27, but he has become a prominent name in recruiting circles.

Mitchell became head of recruiting for MK Dons in 2010 before joining Southampton two years later.

Mitchell played a role in signings such as Nathaniel Clyne, Dejan Lovren, Victor Wanyama, Toby Alderweireld and Sadio Mane before following Mauricio Pochettino to Tottenham in November 2014.

Alderweireld, Dele Alli and Son Heung-min were Mitchell’s main signings at Tottenham, but he retired in 2018.

Mitchell moved to RB Leipzig and then Monaco in 2020, continuing a somewhat nomadic recruiting career.

This summer will likely see Mitchell move again and moving to Liverpool could be something of a U-turn.

The Athletic claimed in February that Mitchell had been “strongly” considered for the Liverpool job, but no deal was expected.

Perhaps Liverpool are in better spirits now, with Mitchell emerging as a candidate to move to Anfield.
