BIRMINGHAM – UAB Softball concluded their day with a split record against ULM and Butler. The Blazers lost to the Warhawks early this morning by the score of 6-3, followed by an afternoon win over the Butler Bulldogs 9-5.

The Blazers’ record improves to 9-6 overall heading into the second day of the 2023 Green & Gold Classic. They prepare for their last day of tournament competition tomorrow morning.

MATCH 1: UAB (3) – ULM (6)
UAB started the game with few chances to get on base, with only one runner stranded in the first two innings. In the top of the third, the momentum began to build, with ULM scoring four runs to give them a quick lead.

The Blazers responded in the bottom of the fourth with an RBI single. lindsey smith give Sierra Frazier the first run on the board for the Blazers. The Blazers kept the score going with another run off a wild pitch to give lindsey smith one run to close the gap to 2-4. UAB would leave a runner on base and conclude the end of the quarter with one out at the plate.

The Warhawks added two more runs in the two-run fifth. A Blazers fielding error put the Bulldogs up 6-2. The Greens and Golds then entered the bottom of the fifth with more energy to close the scoring gap, with Bella Wiggins steal second and advance on a wild pitch to be in scoring position. lauren brook he proceeded with an RBI to give the Blazers the final run they would allocate for the game.

ULM concluded the game with a win, dropping the Blazers’ record to 8-6.

MATCH 2: UAB (9) Butler (5)
The Blazers started the game behind the Bulldogs 0-3, with Butler being the first to draw runs on the board early in the first inning. UAB responded with a two-run home run Sierra Frazier to minimize the score gap to push back. The score stayed at 2-3 through the first inning before Butler added another run on the board in the second to extend their lead to 4-2.

UAB saw an opportunity and took advantage of it in the fourth inning. Alyssa Aguilar he was then put into scoring position on an error by the Bulldogs. First year student kaily collett she put a run on the board through Aguilar before scoring herself, tying the game at four apiece. UAB then scored a run by Collett to take the lead 5-4.

Butler responded with Hoosen’s home run to tie the game at five, his last run before the Blazers turned up the heat with a run drive in the bottom of the fifth. Two RBIs resulted from Aguilar’s single to pinch runner Reese Lowery and third base lindsey smith through the plate. The score went from 7-5 to 8-5 with a RBI single. hannah miles.

The Blazers’ final run came off a home run to left-center field by Frazier, solidifying the lead at 9-5 and improving their record to 9-6.

IN THE FRAME

  • Caitlyn Russell improves her overall record to 3-0 on the season
  • The Blazers hit a total of three home runs over the course of their two Green and Gold Classic games.
  • Over the course of the two games, the Blazers connected 19 times and had 57 at-bats.

UNTIL NEXT TIME
The Blazers wrap up the final day of the Green & Gold Classic with two games, making up for their Friday matchup against Butler postponed due to weather. The UAB faces the Butler Bulldogs at 11:45 am, followed by a meeting with the ULM Warhawks to close the day at 2:00 pm.
