‘Puskas Award’ – Birmingham City defender scores Chilean goal for Under-21

Birmingham City’s under-21s cruised to victory on Thursday night against Crewe Alexandra at St Andrew’s, and that included a remarkable scissor-kick from first-team defender George Friend.

Blues won 3-0 against Alex in the Professional Development League fixture thanks to goals from O’Shea Ellis, 15-year-old Trevan Sanusi and then Friend in the last 15 minutes. Those were useful minutes for Friend, and also for first-team defender Manny Longelo, who also had 90 minutes to his credit.

Friend’s goal, against Gil Merrick, came from a corner on the left, played short before Crewe goalkeeper Tom Booth failed to clear the shot and Friend acrobatically sent the ball past the young keeper and off the post .
