The Echo of the North: Guru at Blackwellgate, Darlington

1. The many mysteries of the Guru of Blackwell Gate

Since 1990, No 24 Blackwellgate has been home to the exclusive Guru boutique. Guru’s lease is up in June and Beryl Hankin and her team are bringing the business online, so the building’s owner has this week put his bricks, mortar and cast iron on the market.

2. Weekend walks: Bolton Castle, Aysgarth Falls and a walk along the Ure

With the days getting longer (finally) now is the perfect time to include some longer walks.

East through the heart of Wensleydale includes Bolton Castle, Aysgarth Falls, riverside walks and some attractive Dales villages.

Bolton Castle is famous for being the “prison” of Mary Queen of Scots for six months while she awaited the pleasures of Elizabeth I.

Tees Esk and Wear Valleys (TEWV) NHS Foundation Trust have said they will carry out a “full review” of Matthew’s care.

These accusations come just days after a damning report was published on mental health provision at a different hospital formerly run by TEWV, which found some areas of care to be “ultimately harmful to patients.”

The Northern Echo: Eat at the Governor's House in the Treadmills development in Northallerton

4. Eating Out: Breakfast at The Governors House in Northallerton and Oyatsu Cafe

The breakfast wars are raging in Northallerton.

Forgive the touch of hyperbole. It’s just a reflection of the feverish nature of food competition in the county town right now.

Another new restaurant opened a few weeks ago, and there are more to come (three no less!) with the opening of the new cinema in the Treadmills development of the old prison.

The latest opening in what was once the Governor’s House of Northallerton Prison is called, with a refreshing lack of pretense but a depressing lack of punctuation, Governor’s House.
