A couple enjoyed a “refreshing” first dip in a city’s harbor, before a council temporarily lifts a swimming ban.

Husband and wife David Quartermain, 59, and Karen Quartermain, 48, went swimming at Baltic Wharf in Bristol on Tuesday.

Members of the public will be able to pay to swim in Bristol Harbor during a five-week pilot program starting in April.

Quartermain said he was at a “natural high” after his swim.

Ms Quartermain said the swim was “really refreshing.”

The couple was testing the temporary swim course setup and associated equipment.

Speaking after their swim, in water estimated to be between 9C and 10C, the couple said they were looking forward to getting back.

Quartermain said, “It’s a great place to swim. The backdrop with the houses is beautiful.”

During the five-weekend swim pilot, individuals will swim in a designated area with a pontoon, lifeguards, safety boats, and regular water quality sampling.

The couple described the scenery, with Bristol’s famous colored houses in the background, as “beautiful”.

Each one-hour session, for a maximum of 80 people, will cost £7 and take place over a 200-meter (656-foot) course.

Councilor Ellie King, a cabinet member for public health and communities, said the water would be tested before the pilot sessions.

“This is the cleanest part of the port and the water is tested regularly, we do it weekly,” Ms King said.

“We hope this is complete for the pilot,” Ms King added.
