David de Gea must rank alongside Peter Schmeichel and Edwin van der Sar as the best goalkeepers to have played for Manchester United.
That’s the message from former United manager Rene Meulensteen, who enjoyed two seasons at Old Trafford and was at the club when De Gea signed a decade ago. De Gea made his 400th Premier League appearance during a 2-0 win over Leeds at Elland Road on Sunday afternoon.
He marked the occasion with a clean sheet. However, there is no certainty that the long-serving Spaniard will stick around beyond next summer, despite his brilliant form.

The 32-year-old De Gea has just a few months left on his current contract, although talks have been underway for him to extend his service to a 13th season and beyond. But whenever he dons his United gloves for the last time, where will De Gea rank alongside Schmeichel, Van der Sar and the others?
Speaking as a guest on talkSPORT radio station, former manager Meulensteen said: “I think he is one of the best goalkeepers Manchester United have ever had. If you go back in time that you can remember, obviously everyone will be talking about (Peter) Schmeichel. and Edwin van der Sar.
“David de Gea will be named in those three. Who is the best of those three? So it’s probably down to personal opinion. He’s done incredibly well for Manchester United. It’s unbelievable that we’re talking about 400 appearances. Just fantastic.” .
After progressing through the Atlético Madrid system, De Gea was signed by Sir Alex Ferguson ahead of the 2011/2012 season and has since made 519 appearances for the club in all competitions. Meanwhile, when playing against Leeds, the Spaniard mentioned his milestone of 400 Premier League games.
