Man arrested after woman dies in Beckton fire

A man has been arrested on suspicion of murder after a woman died in a fire.

Emergency services were called to a flat fire in Tollgate Road, Beckton, just before 5:30pm today (April 6).

According to the Metropolitan Police, one woman was killed and “others” were injured by the fire.

At this time it is not clear how many injured there are.

A spokesman for the force said: “A man has been arrested on suspicion of murder in connection with the incident and investigations are ongoing.”

According to the London Fire Brigade, the first and second floors of a residential block were on fire, along with the stairway from the first to the second floor.

There were six fire engines and around 40 firefighters from East Ham, Plaistow, Barking and surrounding stations.

The brigade said that at the moment the cause of the fire is unknown.

Newham Mayor Rokhsana Fiaz said on Twitter: “Together with Cabinet Member for Community Safety Cllr Amar Virdee we are deeply saddened by the news that there has already been one death from the fire which broke out in flats in Beckton.

“Our deepest condolences to the loved ones who are now in mourning.”

The road was closed at Tollgate Road and restrictions were also in place at Bradley Stone Road and Valiant Way.
