Dean Henderson faces an uncertain future as Nottingham Forest deliberates on the possibilities of keeping him beyond his loan spell from Man Utd, a report has revealed.
Man Utd sent Henderson on loan to Nottingham Forest for the current season after he failed to usurp David de Gea as their number one. All along, it’s been unclear what will happen to the academy graduate afterward.
Henderson has been celebrating his 26th birthday on Sunday. So, she’s at an age where she won’t want to be a rotation option, understandably.
De Gea’s own future at Man Utd remains up for debate facing the end of his contract in summer. Perhaps there could be a place for Henderson to get it back at Old Trafford.
But you’ll only want to come back if you’re going to be first choice. It could be debated whether he has done enough to justify that.
Alternatively, Henderson could explore a permanent transfer away from Man Utd. There have been suggestions of other pretenders, like tottenhambut Forest could be among the top contenders in that case.
However, an update to Soccer Insider has revealed that they are no closer to deciding whether they will want that or not.
When Henderson was injured over the winter, Forest reacted by signing Keylor Navas on loan from Paris Saint-Germain. For the summer, they will have to choose one or the other to try to move on.
However, if they suffer relegation directly to the Championship, either of them will probably be out of reach. On the other hand, ensuring the safety of the Premier League ahead of the new season would allow them to reaffirm their plans either way.
Dean Henderson hopes to prove himself again
Forest boss Steve Cooper will want to have a guaranteed number one next season, regardless of which division his team finishes in. Ideally, they want to set themselves up for a second successive season in the top flight, with a main goalkeeper of the appropriate pedigree to match. .
For now, there is no preference between Navas and Henderson. Both will have to seize their opportunities to prove themselves before the end of the current campaign.
Navas is closer to the end of his career, so the upcoming battle will likely have a bigger impact on Henderson’s career trajectory.
Naturally, Man Utd will keep abreast of any developments relating to Henderson, who they still have on contract until 2025.
The England international with one cap has played 20 times for Forest this season. During those appearances, he has conceded 33 goals.
Instead, Navas’ record with El Bosque so far is six games and 12 goals conceded.
