Gardening guru Monty Don reveals this important job to do in the garden before the end of March.

For those of us still learning to navigate the world of gardening, any gardening tip ideas are always welcome. And even for those who are more experienced, a little reminder doesn’t hurt.

Pruning Tips from Monty Don

On your website (opens in a new tab)Monty Don explains that March is the best time to prune shrubs and vines that will flower into new growth, particularly late-blooming clematis, roses, buddleias and caryoptera.’

“I like to do this when I start to see new growth appear, but resist the urge to do it if it’s a mild February, as a late frost can cut off subsequent regrowth.”

He stresses the importance of pruning because failing to do so can often be seen as a garden mistake to be avoided. If you want to take your garden landscaping to the next level, staying on top of this is paramount, and it’s not that hard either.

The Royal Horticultural Society (opens in a new tab) (RHS), explain that pruning is important because it helps to restrict size, remove dead or unsightly growth, increase vigour, improve shape, or keep the plant in a healthy state to produce flowers, berries, etc.

Shrub pruning is especially important because, if left unpruned, they can continue to grow from where the previous season’s growth ended, become heavy and bloom well above eye level, according to the RHS.

‘Shrubs like Cornus, Willow and Sambucus can also be cut back to encourage fresh shoots whose bark will glow a brighter color next winter,’ explains Monty Don.

Adds Monty Don: “I know pruning can be the cause of some anxiety, but there’s only one rule to follow, which is always cut something back, whether it’s a side shoot or bud. Other than that, don’t worry too much about the outward facing buds or any such refinement.

‘Cut with abandon or not cut at all. Either way, the plant will almost certainly be fine.

So this is your cue. Before the end of March, consider getting outside and taking care of that long list of yard chores you’ve been meaning to do. It’s the perfect way to usher in the spring season.
