Nottingham Forest star Moussa Niakhate called up by Senegal

Nottingham Forest star Moussa Niakhate has been called up by Senegal and that could make Steve Cooper very anxious. The Reds defender returned after seven months injured in Friday’s loss to Newcastle at the City Ground.

Forest signed Niakahte from Bundesliga side Mainz during the summer transfer window. He cost the club around £13 million and he was expected to be a real asset to Cooper’s team.

Just two games into his career at the City Ground, disaster struck. Niakhate was injured during a 1–0 home win over West Ham and it took around seven months for his hamstring to heal.

Niakhate is now back and will be called upon to help Forest out of the relegation zone. The Reds defender did well against Newcastle on Friday, although he did give away the late penalty.

The 27-year-old pledged allegiance to the Senegal squad while injured. He was invited to a training camp in November and many Forest fans felt that he suggested he was close to making a comeback.

However, now he is back and will be connecting with his international peers. Senegal faces a doubleheader against Mozambique and it will be interesting to see if Niakhate plays.

Niakhate called up by Senegal and Cooper could be eager

The Reds player hopes to add a few minutes throughout this week. After coming back, the challenge now is to stay in shape and continue to help Forest.

However, Cooper will surely not be happy about this. As soon as he got his star defender back, he will now potentially play against a nation that Senegal should probably beat easily anyway.

Forest can’t afford to lose any more central defenders. Felipe and Joe Worrall are the other two options and Niakhate is vital to Forest’s fortunes in the coming months.
