Live police scene in Fargate, Sheffield, as a huge cordon in place after a man stabbed

An attempted murder investigation has been launched after a man was attacked and stabbed to death in Sheffield last night.

Just before 10pm on Friday March 17, South Yorkshire Police officers were called to Fargate in the center of town and found a seriously injured man. A 56-year-old man was walking in the area before a stranger approached him and allegedly struck him in the head, causing him to fall to the ground.

The unknown man reportedly stabbed him in the chest. The victim was rushed to the hospital in an ambulance, where she remains at this time. He is in critical condition.

A 24-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of attempted murder. He remains in police custody. A scene remains in place at Fargate as officers go about their business.

An image shared on social media shows a police van parked outside Boots, where a cordon has blocked off the area and officers are on duty.

Statement issued by South Yorkshire Police

A South Yorkshire Police spokesman said: “Officers responded to reports of a stabbing in Fargate in the city center last night (March 17) just before 10pm. A 56-year-old man is reported to be walking down Fargate when approached by an unknown man who has punched him in the head, causing him to fall to the ground.

“Then it is alleged that once the victim was on the floor, the man stabbed him in the chest. The victim was taken to the hospital by ambulance where she remains stable but in critical condition. The suspect, a 24-year-old man who was arrested on suspicion of attempted murder, remains in police custody.

“A scene remains at Fargate as officers go about their business. Neighborhood officers will be in the area throughout the day to provide peace of mind for the community.
