The northbound M18 was closed between junctions 6 and 7 this afternoon due to a multi-vehicle crash following an earlier incident in which a car flipped over on its roof.

It has been a difficult day for motorists using the M18 with multiple incidents on the northbound carriageway causing severe delays. Previous incidents near the junction with the M1 have now been cleared up.

The closure near exit 6 had been in effect since around 9:45 am this morning. Emergency services were on the scene and National Highways estimated that the road would remain closed past noon.

A Highways England spokesperson said on social media: “The M18 in South Yorkshire is CLOSED northbound between J6 (Thorne) and J7 (for M62) due to a multi-vehicle collision. Emergency services are present. More information , including detour details to follow.”


Traffic was previously stopped as it approached a scene between Junction 1 and Junction 2 in South Yorkshire. There were long delays on the route after an incident caused a car to roll over on its roof.

Emergency services responded and it is unclear at this time if there are any casualties. The M18 has now reopened.

The northbound M18 closure is expected to last until after midday

The latest estimate from National Highways suggests the M18 will be closed until after midday. In an incident report they said: “The event is expected to clear between 12:30 and 12:45.”

  • Leave the M18 northbound at J6
  • At the roundabout, take the 1st exit onto the A614 and continue for 10 miles then join the M62 at J36 to continue your journey.

Drivers using the Waze navigation service are reporting bumper-to-bumper traffic on the M18 from Rotherham to Thurcroft, with speeds as low as 3mph.

Bumper-to-bumper traffic has also been reported from Thurcroft to Bramley, with speeds of 5 mph. In addition, drivers are also setting up alerts for foggy conditions in the area.
