Paul Heckingbottom sends pressure message to Middlesbrough and Luton after Sheffield United win

Paul Heckingbottom says he wants Middlesbrough and Luton to “feel the pressure” after his side’s 1-0 win at Norwich yesterday. James McAtee’s goal in the second half was enough for Sheffield United to secure a deserved win.

It was a win that felt huge in the context of the promotion race. With Middlesbrough wasting a half-time lead on Huddersfield Town, United are now six points clear in the automatic places.

Michael Carrick’s men remain in third on goal difference but have been joined by the Hatters after their 2-0 win over Watford. However, Heckingbottom’s side have a game to play for both of them.

With Norwich, relegated from the Premier League last season and chasing a play-off place, in need of a win for their own reasons, the manner of the win shed light on United’s promotion credentials.

Heckingbottom says his Sheffield United team is comfortable being the side the chasing group wants to catch, but he hopes this latest success could add more pressure on those teams, who can’t afford many mistakes between now and May.

“Every time we win, whether Middlesbrough and Luton and the teams behind us win or not, we make the margin of error finer with them,” Heckingbottom told Yorkshire Live.

“I want them to feel the pressure. This is the best moment of the season. We’re lucky, we’ve been in this position all season, so we feel comfortable.”
