Morecambe lost to Sheffield Wednesday at Hillsborough 3 goals to nil.
Barry Bannan’s opening goal was complemented by a brace from Josh Windass, whose goals came either side of halftime.
Sheffield Wednesday made a quick start and took the lead early on when the ball was passed back to Bannan who kicked wide into the bottom left corner.
Connor Ripley made an impressive save in the 20th minute to deny a low effort from Windass from distance.
Wednesday doubled their lead a minute later when Windass deflected Michael Smith’s effort over the line.
The Shrimps were almost back in the game when Michael Mellon’s shot from the left side of the box was well saved by Owls goalkeeper Cameron Dawson.
Morecambe came close again eight minutes before half-time when Jensen Weir scored a free-kick just above Wednesday’s goal.

The Shrimps came close to getting the one back when Cole Stockton volleyed Liam Shaw’s cross from the right towards goal and saw his effort saved by Dawson.
Bannan then nearly found a second 15 minutes before the end when her curling effort from range flew wide of Ripley’s right post.
Windass got his second and The Owls’ third three minutes from time when substitute Fisayo Dele-Bashiru found him in the box to convert and round off the process.
