For the first time, Wakefield Trinity will host a wheelchair RL game as we look to bolster our already successful Disabled Rugby League organization at the club.

After months of tireless work, the club is now in a position to stage a friendly match when Sheffield Eagles head to Wakefield in a historic moment for the club. Starting in 2021, the road has been a long one for our Wheelchair RL program, starting from the ground up, using funding from the Created By funds of RLWC2021.

With a steady increase in entrants, the game exploded late last year when England took the world by storm, winning the first Wheelchair Rugby League World Cup, injecting passion for the game in the process. With more than 10 players and weekly training sessions, we are looking to take the program to the next level, organizing development meetings during the new season.

A hard-hitting version of conventional rugby league, the game follows similar rules to its creator’s, using skill, speed and stamina to advance up the pitch.

For most, this will be their first time playing in a competitive wheelchair environment, with many having not played the game in the past, and experienced head coach Gavin Dobson will show them the ropes. This is quite a feat as we look to rapidly expand the game across the club and the Wakefield community.

The showdown will take place from 2:00pm at St Thomas A Becket Secondary School, just off Barnsley Road in Wakefield, and spectators will be encouraged to leave a donation for the Foundation’s continued work in this sector. .

Speaking on the game’s launch, Rugby League and Inclusion Officer Charlie Doherty said: “Over the last few months, since last year’s World Cup, we’ve seen a steady increase in entrants, which is really nice. to see. .

“The sport is now a staple program in our inclusion setup, and you can see how much our players enjoy it. I look forward to seeing our side in action and competing against a solid team.”
